Next time you're in downward facing dog, you might want to try out down dog split, also called three legged dog. See how it's done.

Transcript:Down Dog Split Pose

Hi, I'm Joelle a yoga teacher and blogger at Yoga Nation. We are here at Go Yoga in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how to perform down dog split.

Down Dog Split

Focus: hips turning out; shoulders; knee. Down dog split is also called three legged dog.

Down Dog Split Positioning

Come into downward facing dog and lift your right leg up behind you. Keep the leg inwardly rotated at first—meaning, keep the toes facing the floor and the hips square. Lift the leg as high as you can, reaching up through the arms, the torso and the tailbone to stretch the body up and back.

Down Dog Split Variation

Then, if you'd like to try a variation to stretch the hips open, rotate the leg in the hip socket and stack the right hip on top of the left. Here you can either keep the leg straight or bend the knee and play with stretching into the top of the right thigh. To come out, square the hips again and lower the leg down. Then to the other side.
