Transcript:What is Xbox Live?

Hi, I'm Mark Zamora, gaming expert here for About.com and I'm going to walk you through Xbox Live.

How to Access Xbox Live

Xbox Live is the Online service for your Xbox system. It allows you to connect to other players online to play games, interact and more.  You can also buy games through Xbox Live as well as use your broadband internet connection to connect to different apps like Netflix.

In order to use Xbox Live 2 things: First you need to connect your Xbox 360 to a broadband internet connection. Then you need an account, which you can create at xbox.com.

Xbox Live GamerTag

You’ll create a GamerTag, which is your Username and how everyone will know you on Xbox Live. There are multiple tiers of Xbox Live accounts - Silver and Gold. Silver is your basic free account giving you basic access and Gold is a paid premium account which allows you to play against others online and use Live Apps.

Buying in the Xbox Live Marketplace

As I said before, you can also buy games and download apps and demos on the Xbox Live Marketplace. You’ll find access to that on the Games tab on your Xbox Dashboard.Browse different types of apps, games and demos in order to find stuff you like. You only need a free silver account to have access to these, but you’ll need Microsoft Points, the Xbox currency to buy games. Most apps are free to use if you have the proper credentials.

That's Xbox Live in a nutshell - now you're ready to play online. For more, be sure to check out gadgets.about.com. Thanks for watching.
