Transcript:The Basics of a Soccer Field

Hi, my name is Ashley Hammond. I'm the owner of the Soccer Domain Football Club in Montclair, NJ. I'm here for About.com to talk about the regulation dimensions of an eleven aside soccer field.

Size of a Soccer Field

Today, there are a number of different versions of soccer. Around the world, 5-a-side, 8-a-side, and 11-a-side games take place. The most common game in soccer is the 11-a-side game and this is played on what is referred to as a large sided field. The regulation dimensions for an 11-a-side soccer field are usually about a 100 yards long by 60 yards wide. This is an excellent size for junior soccer. However, professional players play on a bigger field which is usually between 110 - 115 yards long and 70 - 80 yards wide.

Lines at Midfield

The field is divided into two halves with a line running through the middle. On this line in the middle is a circle which is 20 yards in diameter and is used at the kickoff of the game or any restart at the center of the field. The circle is the distance that a player must stand from the ball while the kickoff is being taken.

The Ends of a Soccer Field

At each end of the soccer field there is an 18 yards long by 44 yards wide box known as the "Penalty Area" including a 10 yard arc at the top of the box. Fouls committed in this area may result in a penalty kick. The standard size for an adult soccer goal is 24ft wide by 8ft high.
