Transcript:How to Reduce Morning HasslesHi, I'm Kathy Moore for About.com. The morning rush around the house can be stressful for parents and children alike. This program will offer some strategies to reduce morning-time hassles.
I have never been what you would call a morning person. However as a Mom I have to be right on top of things every morning to get everyone ready and out the door in time for work and school. Accomplishing this goal in a less stressful way begins with planning the night before.
Plan Ahead at NightAt bedtime each night I ask the kids to choose the clothes they want to wear the next day. We set them on top of their dressers where they can be easily accessed in the morning.
Lately I have started having the kids choose what they want for breakfast before bed too. This change has eliminated what was one of the more frustrating and time-consuming parts of our morning routine.
Prepare Lunches and Bags the Night BeforeAfter the kids are in bed I use the free time to prepare the next days lunch boxes. Then I put them in the refrigerator so they are all set to go in the morning. While I am in the kitchen, I set out the cereal boxes, bowls, cutlery and other items we will need for breakfast.
Next I find each child's backpack and place it near the door. I also make sure on Gym Day or Library Day that the backpack is “packed” with the necessary items.
Keep a Calendar HandyIn our house we keep a simple calendar on the wall that shows what each family member has scheduled for the week. Having this visual reminder is another way to plan ahead and reduce stress.
Establish Morning RoutinesWhen the kids get up in the morning, they follow the same routine each day. First we eat breakfast then brush our teeth and get dressed. Once everyone has their hair combed and shoes tied, there might even be enough time to read a book before we head out the door.
With a little planning and advance preparation, you can make mornings more manageable around your house. Thanks for watching. To learn more visit us on the Web at About.com.
