Transcript:How to Make Quick Tacos for Kids
Hi, I'm Nadia Chapman for About.com and today we are making quick tacos for kids!
Since we have plenty of protein in the beans and cheese, we'll skip the meat for today! Here's what you will need for these easy tacos.
Ingredients for Quick Tacos
Small flour or corn tortillas, or hard shells tacos. If that's the case, I recommend buying the flat bottom ones since they are easy to fill for kids, and can stand on their on.
- diced tomatoes
- shredded lettuce
- black or pinto or refried beans
- grated cheese
- sour cream
- avocados
- 1 lemon or lemon juice
- salsa
- and cilantro if your kids love the taste!
If you kids like onions, you add sauteed onions, or chopped green onions...just remember we are making quick tacos, so we want to keep simple!
Preparing the a Few Taco Ingredients
Warm up the beans, and warm up the tortillas or hard shell tacos in the oven at low temperature.
A good trick especially when the tacos are for kids, is too let the cheese melt inside the tacos while they are in the oven. It will help the taco to stay together, and will make less of a mess since the cheese won't fall off when it's time to eat! So, after warming the tacos a bit, add the cheese!
Slice your avocados and add lemon juice to prevent them from turning brown.
Tips for Serving Kids Tacos
Ask your kids to place the various toppings in the middle of the table once everything is ready and in separate bowls, that way everyone will fill their tacos the way they want!
Taco night are even better when you encourage your kids to fill their tacos by themselves. We all know that when kids participate in the kitchen, they tend to eat what's in they're plate!
If you find tacos to be too messy, you can always fill a plain soft tortilla with cheese, beans and salsa and put in in a pan with a little olive oil. Fold it in half like a quesadilla, and add thin sliced avocado at the end when the taco is done. This will make it easy to eat for smaller kids! Also, note that adding refried beans instead of regular whole beans will be less messy.
That's it, it's that simple! A healthy and easy family dinner everyone will like!
