Transcript:How to Make Easy Chocolate Chip Cookies for Kids

Hi I'm Amber Davis for About.com. My kids always love to help me in the kitchen. Sometimes it can be hard to involve them however making chocolate chip cookies is easy and a lot of fun.

Ingredients for Chocolate Chip Cookies

Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 1 stick softened butter
  • 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 c. flour
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 of a bag of milk chocolate chips

What Adults Should Do with the Ingredients

Start by preheating the oven to 375 degrees. Now depending on the ages of your helpers you might want to do things a little differently. If your kids are older, then you can involve them right from the start, by helping you gather and measure all the ingredients out. If your kids are younger, then you are going to want to start by pre-measuring all the ingredients. I like to put them in slightly larger containers so the kids don’t spill as easily. Start by measuring out a half cup of sugar, set aside. Next a quarter cup of brown sugar. Followed by 1 and a quarter cup of flour. Now crack an egg in a bowl and pour the 2 teaspoons of vanilla into the same bowl.

How to Involve Kids Baking Cookies

Now it’s time for your little helpers to be involved. Start by washing their hands. In a large bowl have your kids pour in the sugar, the brown sugar and the butter. With your help let them start mixing. Next have them pour in the egg and the vanilla.  Continue stirring until smooth. Then have them start adding the flour little by little. Continue stirring.  At this stage you may to assist as the mixture stiffens up. Next add the chocolate chips. Kids enjoy this part because they can sneak some as they are adding them in. Continue stirring until the chips are mixed in.

Let the kids arrange 12 spoonfuls on the cookie sheet while you assist by pointing out where to put them. Have them stand back as you place it in the oven. Bake for approximately ten minutes. The cookies are done when the edges are nicely browned. Remove the cookies from oven. Let them stand for 2 minutes and then place them on wire rack to cool.  Then it’s time for you and your helpers to enjoy a glass of milk and one of their delicious cookies.
