Transcript:Tips for Buying a Good Backpack for Kids
Hi, I'm Susan Harding, here today with About.com, and today we're sharing some tips on how to choose the best backpack for kids.
New Backpack: Check Fit
Before buying a backpack or using one from last year, have your child try it on.
We all know how quickly kids grow, and the backpack that was a perfect size last year may be too small this year.
New Backpack: Check Material
Feel the material, and make sure it's high quality -- cheap backpacks with flimsy material won't last the school year.
New Backpack: Make Sure It Has Enough Space
Open up the bag and check out the compartments, making sure there's enough room for your child to find things easily and to store all of the books and supplies they'll take to and from school each day.
New Backpack: Check Shoulder Straps
Check the shoulder straps, make sure they are padded and not too narrow. Narrow straps tend to dig into shoulders.
New Backpack: Test the Zipper
Test the zipper. You may want to add zipper pulls, to protect the zipper and make it easier to open. The little pulls are inexpensive and can reduce stress on the zippers, saving you from having to buy a new backpack if the zipper breaks.
New Backpack: Know School Rules
And before buying a backpack, check the school's rules. Some require backpacks to be see-through; some won't allow them with wheels; and some ban backpacks altogether.
New Backpack: Choose a Style
And of course, make sure your child likes the style, pattern and color of the backpack, since it's an accessory they'll be using everyday.
