Transcript:Word Tutorial: How to Use Excel Files in Word
Hello, this is Adam Watstein for About.com. Microsoft Office allows you to use Excel with Word and two great ways of using Excel with Word is copying and pasting and by copying and pasting using a link, which will allow you to continue to update your Word document automatically whenever you change your Excel document.
Cutting and Pasting from Excel to Word
But first, let's look how to cut and paste from an Excel document to a Word document. Let's say I've got an Excel document here and I want to take the data and copy it to this Word document on the left. I take my mouse and I drag it over the data on my Excel document. Then I'm going to go up to Copy, the Copy icon. Selecting it, I will move over to my Word document, click on the top, to activate it, select where I want it to go and then I'll move up to Paste, the Paste icon. And there you go, I've now cut and pasted from an Excel document to a Word document. That's a simple cut and paste.
Linking Excel and Word
But, if I want to link the two documents together, I'm going to go up to Edit and Undo the Paste, I'm going to go back to my Excel document, highlight what I want to copy, go back up to Copy, go back over to my Word document, select it, go up to Edit and down to Paste Special - a dialogue box will open – I'm going to select Paste Link, and from there, I'm going to select Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object. Select OK, and now when your Excel data shows up on your Word document, it will be linked to the Excel document.
So, on my Excel sheet, if I were to select a cell, and type in new information, you'll see that it immediately shows up n the Word document. I head back over to Excel, add in some more information and again you'll see it immediately on the Word document. Microsoft Office makes it really easy to use Excel with Word, allowing you to paste or paste with a link with ease. For more information, please visit About.com.
