Hello, this is Adam Watstein for About.com.

Headers and footers are especially useful when you need to put numbers on a document or you need to remind the reader exactly who is responsible for writing the document -- and here is how we do it.

How to Insert Headers in Microsoft Word

In the Insert tab, in the Header and Footer pane, you find the header and footer tabs. Selecting on  header, you will then see a list of templates for you to choose from. Find the one you want to use, select it, and you'll see it sits above your document. You can then type in what you want the header to say. In this case, we're using a title. When we close the header and footer, we see it gets greyed out and as we scroll down we can see that it's at the top of each page.

How to Insert Footers in Microsoft Word

To insert a footer, go back to Insert, select the Footer tab. Again you'll see a nice long list of templates to choose from -- and here is my author's name, John Smith, and I'm going to tab over the page number. When I close header and footer, you will then be able to see that there's page one at the bottom of page one, and as I scroll down to page two, the numbers automatically increase as you move along.

That's how we insert headers and footers. For more information please visit About.com.
