Next navigate to the reference tab and under the footnotes group click insert footnote, you can also hold down CTRL + ALT and hit F. This will place a footnote at the bottom of the page for the reader to reference.

To add an endnote is the same processes but simply click add endnote instead or holding CTRL + ALT and hitting D. Footnotes will show up at the bottom of the page by default and Endnotes will show up at the end of the document. If you would like to change this click to open the footnote and endnote dialogue box and change the settings. To find the footnotes or endnotes in your paper head back to the footnotes group, click the drop down box to navigate to the next or previous footnote or endnote. To delete a footnote or end note just select it with your cursor and press delete.
