Transcript:How to Donate Your Long Hair
Hi I'm Andrea Cameron for About.com and today I'm gonna explain what you'll need to do to donate hair.
Supplies for Donating Long Hair
Here are a few things you will need:
- A couple of elastics
- A comb
- Plastic bag
- Padded envelope
Donating to Locks of Love
There are several places to send your donated hair but today we're going to focus on "Locks of Love" Locks of Love, like many others, creates wigs for children with cancer. Many adults and children welcome this opportunity to help those that have lost their hair to cancer treatment. In fact, some will grow their hair out solely for the purpose of donating it.
What Kind of Hair Can Be Donated
There are a few guidelines you need to follow to ensure the hair will be used.
First the hair you are donating has to be 10 inches long from tip to tip to create the hairpiece. Layered hair is acceptable as long as the shortest layer is at least 10 inches long and if you are donating layered hair you will want to divide it into multiple ponytails.
You can use hair that has been colored or permed but not hair that has been bleached. Bleached hair causes a negative chemical reaction during the manufacturing process. Be sure to consult with the person donating the hair to determine that it has never been bleached before.
How to Cut Hair for Donating
Before you cut the hair it must be in a ponytail or a braid. If your hair is long enough for the final cut you wish to achieve, you can simply pull all the hair back in a low ponytail at the base of the neckline. Take your ruler and find the point where you have at least 10 inches and place the elastic just below the cut you're going to make. Hold the ponytail firmly in one hand and cut the hair at least a half inch above the elastic. It will take several cuts to get through a large amount of hair.
Make sure the hair is clean and completely dried before it is mailed in.
Finally you will place the ponytail or braid inside a plastic bag and place that inside a padded envelope.
If you would like to receive acknowledgement for your donation, Go to the "Locks of Love" website, print up the form and fill out your contact information. Mail it in with the hair.
