Transcript:How to Create an Easy Curly Hair Updo

Hi, I'm Hilary Bilstad, a hair stylist with Arrojo Studio in New York City, here for About.com.

I'm going to be doing an easy, curly hair updo today on Susan. We'll be working with a lot of texture in the hair and it's just going to be an easy way to put her hair up.

Take a Side Part

So basically, what I'm going to be doing is taking a deep side part (wherever you think may be nicest or more flattering on you), and I'm going to take it all the way down to about the end of the ear. And I'm going to get that out of the way, and I'm going to take the back section and I'm going to smooth the hair out with my hands. I'm not using a comb -- you don't want to smooth curly hair out too much, especially with a coarser texture because it's just going to look too frizzy. But we still do want more of a tousled look.

Bobby Pin Hair and Twist

I'm going to take a hair tie, on which I've put two bobby pins on each side of it, and stick one bobby pin -- you can twist the hair a little -- in the middle of the pony tail. Then twist it around the hair twice, and put the other bobby pin in the hair, and you have a nice pony tail. Then, I'm going to create a bun effect by just twisting her hair under. I'll secure this with a bobby pin.

Add Volume to Top

Now, I'm just going to take the hair I sectioned off on the side, and twist, and just loosely add bits of the hair in. And this is just a kind of creative way to get a bit of volume up top. Don't worry if some of these curly bits come out, because that's the beauty of doing an updo for curly hair.

Finished product!

Don’t Stress the Details

So remember the advantage of doing a curly hair updo is that you don't have to worry about every detail -- because it doesn't have to be perfect to look great!
