Hello, this is Nicholas J. Saccomanno for About.com and today we're going to look at some of the various features of Windows 7 Starter. Are you ready? Let's get started! To begin, don't be fooled by the name. Windows 7 Starter is full of useful features.

On Board Applications in Windows 7 Starter

For browsing the Internet, Windows 7 Starter provides the fully capable Internet Explorer 8. Also included is Windows Media Player 12, giving you the ability to play all kinds of videos and music.  Two basic but useful applications bundled in this edition are Wordpad (a simple word processing application) and Paint (a graphics editing application.)

Connectivity and Productivity

To help you get connected on the network, Windows 7 Starter provides the Network and Sharing Center.  Windows Explorer is an easy way for you to view and access files stored on your computer or local network.  And speaking of local network, be sure to connect to your local Windows 7 computers using the Homegroup –an easy way to share files and devices.  Also be sure to take advantage of Jump Lists located on the taskbar.  These mini shortcuts give you fast access to applications and their associated files.

Integrated Safety and Security

One other area where Windows 7 Starter shines is it's inclusion of several safety and security tools.  These range in type from Windows Defender which offers protection against spyware and other potentially unwanted software to the integrated Windows Firewall offering protection from unwanted computer intruders.  Add in on-board Backup and Restore and it's quickly evident that Windows 7 Starter has some very powerful features.

What's Not Included in Windows 7 Starter?

Of course, as a basic edition of Windows 7, Starter does not contain all features.  Here's a look at a few features of Windows 7 found in more advanced versions:

  • Support for Joining Domains
  • Windows Media Center
  • Remote Media Streaming
  • 64 Bit Support
  • Aero visual effects
  • Multi Monitor Support

If none of these features are on your must have list than Windows 7 Starter might be just the OS you're looking for.
