Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com Computing. Today I'll show you how to stop notification balloons from popping up every time you plug in your mp3 player or other device.

  • CLICK Start menu
  • CLICK Run
  • TYPE 'regedit'
  • CLICK 'OK'
  • DOUBLE CLICK HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer /
  • Advanced (on the left column)
  • CLICK Edit / New / DWORD Value
  • NAME the key EnableBalloonTips (with no spaces like this)
  • DOUBLE-CLICK EnableBalloonTips entry to open the Edit DWORD value window
  • ENTER '0' into the value data box to disable notifications
  • If you ever decide to turn the notifications back on, type '1.' In order for these changes to be applied to your computer, you must close out of the registry editor and reboot your computer.
