Transcript:What Is Weight Training?

Hi, I'm Deb Ferraro with Carlsbad Village Yoga and Fitness, here for About.com. Today we're going to talk about weight training.

Origins of Weight Training

Weight training is a type of exercise that is aimed at increasing the strength and size of your muscles. Interestingly, weight training is a very ancient form of exercise. In fact, Hippocrates is quoted as saying, "That which is used, develops, and that which is not used, wastes away". And that is the principle behind weight training. You keep working your muscles to prevent them from wasting away.

Types of Weight Training

There are several different types of weight training depending on what your goals are. Some people train to increase strength, while others train to increase bulk. Depending on what your goals are, you can use high repetitions or low repetitions; you may work your muscles to fatigue or you may not.

Equipment Used in Weight Training

There are multiple options to help you achieve your weight training goals. Something as simple as a hand weights can be used for weight training. Or perhaps you have a gym membership, in which case you can use various gym equipment with heavy weights and bars on it. Also, if machines and dumbbells aren't an option, you can purchase exercise bands for very cheap. Also known as resistance bands, they create a resistance that mimics weights. Also, you can use your own body weight. Going into plank position, pushups, squats -- anything that involves gravity and your own body weight.

Importance of Weight Training

It's very important to incorporate weight training into your weekly routine, at least 2 to 3 times per week, to maintain strength. Thank you for stopping by to learn about weight training. Hopefully this information has been helpful. More information is available at About.com.
