Hi I'm Dr. Allen Peters, Physician & Healthy Aging Expert with www.NourishingWellness.com and I'm here today for About.com to share with you my 5 Top Tips for Losing Weight for Men. And by the way, these are just as good tips for women. So what are the 5 tips?
Make a Commitment to Fitness and HealthNumber one, you must make a commitment. I'm talking about a real commitment, a serious commitment, I'm not talking about a superficial commitment. I have a picture of Yoda in my office and what I love about Yoda is what he said. He said to Luke, remember? “Don't try, just do”. That's the deep commitment.
Set Realistic Weightloss GoalsNumber two, you must set realistic, but significant goals - they shouldn't be too hard, they shouldn't be too easy. Most of the time what we recommend here at Nourishing Wellness Medical Center, is about a pound a week. That seems to be a significant and realistic goal.
Exercise Appropriately to Lose WeightNumber three, how do you do this? You do it by several things. You exercise appropriately. It is virtually impossible to lose weight, to lose weight correctly, to lose the right kind of weight, mainly fat, if you do not exercise appropriately. What is appropriately? You have to get your heart rate up. If you do it by intervals, where you do it very hard for a while, maybe 30 to 60 seconds and then you back off and you can slow off for a while, you only need to do 20 to 30 minutes of exercise a day. How many days? The new recommendation is one day a week per decade of life. Therefore, those of you who are out there like me, we need to exercise 7 days a week. But that is keeping me feeling ½ my age and is keeping my weight down.
Eat HealthyNumber four, you must eat healthy. Eating healthfully is absolutely essential. Eating healthy means eating off of what we call eating the diamond. Eating the diamond means that you have healthy lean protein, healthy carbohydrate which is mainly vegetables, healthy fats, and very little refined grains. That is so important. Most Americans eat far too many grains, far too much pasta, far too much bread, far too much cereal. Once you get these down, these have to become habits. Once they become habits, they are habits for a lifetime. And that is what you need to do to successfully lose weight. Those are my 5 tips for today. I hope you all have great success with them.
