What Is BMI?
BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure of weight relative to height. It is a screening tool that gives a general indication of whether a person's weight falls within a healthy range. The BMI number is derived by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of the person's height.
BMI Calculators
But no one does the math because BMI calculators do it for you and the BMI numbers can be found on BMI charts.Interpret a BMI Chart
To interpret a BMI chart, look for the range where your weight falls: Underweight: < 19 Healthy weight: 19 – 24.9 Overweight: 25 – 29.9 Obese: > 30As an example, the Healthy Weight Range for a person who is 5'5” tall is BMI 19 to 24.9, or a weight somewhere between 114 to 144 pounds. Within that range, the ideal weight range for an individual depends on his bone size and muscle mass.
