Transcript:How to Write Wedding Thank You Notes

Hi! I'm Meghan Lynn Allen for About.com. Wedding gifts and thank you notes go hand-in-hand. So if you receive those gifts, it's time to send those notes.

Timing for Wedding Thank You Notes

Be timely. For gifts received before the wedding, send that note the day you receive the gift. After the wedding, you've got about 1-2 months to send those thank you notes out. People know that wedding and honeymoon time is an exciting and busy time in your life. But two months should be just enough time to get every single thank you note in the mail.

Writing Wedding Thank You Notes

Handwrite and address all wedding thank you notes and use appropriate stationery. Yes, it's going to take awhile and your hands may get cramped. But set a goal for yourself that's attainable. Maybe 10 a day during the week and 20 each day on the weekend. And don't forget - there are two of you now, so split those writing duties with your partner.

Wedding Thank You Note Cards

Don't spend your money on pre-printed cards. Your gift-givers would much rather a personal, handwritten note. If you ordered formal wedding invitations, you may want to consider ordering formal thank you note cards with your married name or monogram on the front, but without that pre-printed note on the inside. You should order these thank you notes at the same time that you order your wedding invitations.

Wording for Wedding Thank You Notes

Never begin your thank you notes with "thank you for." You want to have a personal note like, "Dear Uncle Tom and Aunt Jessica, thank you so much for coming to the wedding, I know you made a long drive."

If you can, include a sentence about how you're using a gift or where you placed it in your home. For instance, "Thank you so much for the beautiful vase. It's sitting on our fireplace, where everyone gets to enjoy it."

Signing Wedding Thank You Notes

Sign your wedding thank you note with "Love," "Yours truly," "Sincerely," or whatever's appropriate, and pop that thank you note in the mail!

Want to go the extra mile? Include a photo of yourself with the person who gave the gift, taken at the wedding. They'll really appreciate that personal, extra touch. Thanks for watching! If you'd like to learn more, visit us on the web at About.com.
