Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com computing. Today I'll show you how to use Craigslist.

What is Craigslist?

Craigslist.org is a website where you can find just about anything you want. When you get to the homepage there seems to be about a million links to different things. You can search for jobs, housing, stuff for sale, services, personal ads, and community activities.

Using Craigslist

Craigslist is known among job hunters as a great resource. Click on the state or city in which you want to search. I'll click New York. At the top you will see New York City and some links to the right. If you hold your mouse over each one youll see that they are different sections of New York City. You dont have to choose a specific location yet. Now under the jobs column select the area in which you would like to find a job. Ill click on real estate. There you will see all the listings under each date that they have been posted. To see more detail click on a link. Now if you would like to see the opportunities in different areas of New York City, click a tab at the top. Ill click on Manhattan and there are all the options for Manhattan.

Tips for Using Craigslist

To get back the the homepage, click new york craigslist. To search for an apartment in a certain area, choose the area first like we did with the job search and then click on what kind of housing youre looking for. Ill choose apartments housing. Choose from all apartments, all no fee apartments, or by owner only. You can always change these options at the top to change your results.

Craigslist is a great place to go if youve just moved to a new area also. You can find used items for sale in your area. This is a helpful feature for any college age person with an apartment.

Craigslist.org is a great resource if youre looking to buy or sell specific item, looking for a place to live or work, but there are other aspects of craigslist that you might want to be aware of.

There are discussion forums to the left side of the homepage where you can discuss anything from celebrities to science. The personal ads are not for younger readers. There can be very mature content posted. But the community pages are a great place to meet people through different activities or interests.

If you want to post an item to sell, a room for rent, or a open job position, go up to post to classifieds. Choose the type of posting. If I choose job posting, you can see that it will charge me 25 dollars to post in New York. This is to limit the amount of non legitimate or excess job postings. If you are looking to sale an item, there is not a fee. Just choose the sub categories that apply and then you can create your post. As with ebay, it is a good idea to include a picture of the item. Once you hit continue you will receive an email that will tell you to click on a link to publish your ad.
