Hi I'm Don Schechter for About.com computing. Today I'll show you how to work with google search.

Searching for Information on Google

There are some features about google that we may no use all the time but are extremely helpful when doing research or when we just need to find something quickly.

Google Search Tips and Tricks

If I want to find a certain website, but I forgot the exact web address for it. I can type it into the text box and hit Im Feeling Lucky. This button is handy because it will bring you straight to the website that would be first on the list of websites that came up with that word or phrase if you hit google search instead.

If you are looking for something specific, but not sure where to find it, click on advanced search to the right of the search bar. Find results by searching with all the words, the exact phrase, at least one of the words, or without the words and you fill in the blanks in any of these areas. You can adjust the number of results per page in the drop down menu on the right. Below you can change some options in order to designate the language, different kinds of file formats, turn on filtering and other settings. Click google search when youre done. Your search results should be more precise and helpful with the advanced search feature.

If you want to do an image search click images at the top. If your word or phrase is still in the search bar, all of the images found will appear. If not, you can type in what youre looking for and click search images. You can weed out different sized pictures by going to the show drop down menu and selecting the size photo you want to view in your results. To return the the web results click web at the top. If you want to see video, news, or a map, select a link at the top.

Additional Information About Google Search

To search within your results go to the bottom of the page and click search within results. Then you can type in another word or phrase to narrow your search. This is not the quickest way to effectively find the information you want, however if you only have vague ideas to work with, it may be helpful.
