Transcript:Types of Web Design Jobs

Hello! I’m Pelpina, here for About.com. In this video, I’ll explain the different types of web design jobs.

Web Designing Job

A web designer takes care of the look and feel of a website: he or she designs the graphics, the layout, colors, the fonts - and anything else you see when you visit a website. A website doesn’t only need to look appealing, it also needs to meet customer and client’s needs. Many web designers work freelance or for contract design firms. Some web designers got a degree or certification in web or graphic design, while others are self-taught. So, while the web designer is responsible for the basic look and feel of a website, a web programmer or web developer makes the website do things. Any interactivity, such as rollover menus, interactive buttons, or forums.

Web Programming Job

Web programmers make a website work, and need to know web languages like HTML, PHP and ASP. It’s possible to build a career in web programming without a degree, but because of the high level of programming that’s required, it’s best to get a computer science degree.

Web Producing Job

A web producer is a role that’s a bit harder to define. It’s usually a broad role that combines aspects of design, journalism and marketing. Some producers actually create the HTML and CSS for a website, while other web producers are responsible for basic design, driving traffic and the user experience. So, depending on the responsibilities of the position, web producers not only need technical skills, but also solid writing skills. That’s why web producers can come from a variety of backgrounds.

And lastly, we need people to create content: the web writers. They write articles and sometimes take pictures. Many web writers work freelance from home. While some writers have a journalism educational background, many web writers just started with blogging. So if you enjoy writing, and find yourself blogging every day, you might enjoy being a professional web writer. For more on web design, visit compute.about.com
