Hi, my name is Andrea Perini. I’m the founder of vagabondnyc.com vintage store. I’m here for About.com to tell you a little about investing in vintage for work wear and how to wear it.

Three Piece Suits

What’s really great if you’re thinking about investing in work wear is to start with an actual three piece suit and what you can do with it is just amazing. If you see this – this is a tuxedo style, sort of men’s style jacket that can be worn with jeans. That can be worn with a pencil skirt of any kind. Nora, open it up for me.

There’s a beautiful silk blouse underneath. And, just wanted you to notice some of the details. There are crystalline pearl cuff links. French cuffs. And, um, a beautiful, beautiful, beautifully shapes bubble skirt with rouging at the hem. Again, this is something that you completely split up and wear as separates.

So, as an example, we have this beautiful brocade shell here. That, instead of wearing the shirt, the entire thing, you can wear with the skirt some heels. Go to work. Straight from work to cocktail, maybe a cardigan over it. Take that off and have some fun.

A Business Look

For something a little bit more staid, maybe a boardroom, court, you can wear a beautiful silk jersey in another shade, in another neutral shade, sort of a charcoal gray which would also offset this sort of a lighter charcoal. All together, just a really beautiful, simple, stream-lined piece, that’s very modern, very current, looks very much today. With a little flair.

Casual Work Clothes

And then if you want something a little more casual. A little more romantic, you could take this beautiful Chloe formal blouse, circa 70’s, and again, pair it with a beautiful skirt and just even go without tights. Maybe some flats. Anything will do with this. It’s just something that’s timeless and can be paired pretty much with anything. And you can not be afraid of mixing these sorts of patterns and textures together. And, it’s acyually quite nice and it will stand out.

Modern Look

Another example is very on trend, 80’s, pleated, cropped trouser, um, that you can wear again with this beautiful blouse, with a tank top and a cardigan, anything you want. But again, this is a staple piece. Very well made, not expensive. Designer made and something you can again mix and match to your wardrobe. So you can, again, put a whole outfit together in vintage and look completely modern. Vintage never looked so good.

Youthful Glam

If you want to go with a little youthful glam you can actually just take the skirt away entirely, and pair this almost long enough, almost coat length or jacket length tuxedo jacket, with the blouse, without, with a camisole underneath. Some leggings, a cute show, and you’ll be ready to go to a party. And then finally, for a little bit more rock and roll, if yu want you can wear over the yellow blouse, over the bubble skirt, you can wear again, a beautiful vintage blazer, with studs and stones that’s very current right now. Very on trend and you’ll have a timeless very well made piece, that will look good forever.
