Hi, I’m Shane Murphy, your video game Guru for About.com. Today we’ll discuss Grand Theft Auto IV’s most ridiculous glitches and how to exploit them.

Glitches in Grand Theft Auto IV

Even after all the patches for GTAIV there are still a few very bizarre glitches you can consistently trigger to comical effect.

Swing Set Glitch

Probably the most popular involves a certain swing set. Head over to a playground in Firefly Projects to find it. Either swing will work. Run to and past one of the swings a few times to get it moving. You’ll notice that the swing will keep moving on its own. Eventually, it will break and start swinging wildly.

Now jump straight up and grab the railing at the top of the swing. Hang there right by the swinging chain and eventually...Apparently, if the swinging chain hits Niko just right, it will launch him into the air. Occasionally, you’ll even survive.

Patience is key though, since the swing may just knock you off or even kill you before it works. You can even exploit the same bug with a car or a motorcycle.

Glitch Allowing Safe Falls

Another great glitch that has a little more utility will let you safely fall from any eight, great for getting down from skyscrapers.

There are a few ways to make this work, but by far the easiest involves a Molotov cocktail. throw one so it lands as close to the edge of the building as possible.

Now, before the flames die out, walk over through them slowly before walking right off the building. Niko must have started his “on fire” animation and screaming for help before you fall or it won’t work. Even after the flames go out, Niko will fall stiffly through the air. When you hit the ground, you shouldn’t take any damage. This will work from any height.

Move Beneath the Floor

Another fun glitch lets you go beneath the floor geometry and move about the city uninhibited.

First, you’ll need to get a helicopter. Now fly to the Airfield and then head over to the patch of concrete that’s between the two oil drums.

You’ll need to now lower the helicopter into the ground quickly right at this spot. Repeatedly bump down into the concrete, preferably at an angle. Eventually you chopper will sink right through the ground and you’ll find yourself inside the game’s geometry.

From here you can go anywhere and come up at any point in Liberty City, even underwater. Once you do decide to re-enter the normal game area though, you’ll only be able to go back down the way you came.
