Transcript:How to Cook White Rice

Hi, I'm Roblé for About.com. Today I'm going to show you how to make perfectly cooked white rice. Here we go.

Ingredients for Cooking White Rice

Here are our ingredients:
  • 1 cup long grain white rice
  • 2 1/4 cup vegetable stock
  • 1/4 cup white onions (small dice)
  • 1 teaspoon chopped garlic
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • kosher salt
  • fresh cracked black pepper

Instructions for Cooking White Rice

So, here we had a saucepan over medium heat. I'm going to go ahead and add in oil. Wait for it to start to smoke. We have a little smoke. Adding your garlic. Mix that around for a couple of seconds. About 10 seconds.

Now we are going to add in our onions. We are going to sweat the onions for about 30 seconds. While these onions are sweating you want to go ahead and season them with a nice big pinch of salt and a few turns from the pepper mill.

Next, we are going to add in our rice. Mix this around. We are going to toast the rice. Just keep smelling it. You are looking for a nutty smell. Soon as you get a nutty smell you know that the righteous toasted and then we are going to add in our stock. So, I'm getting that nutty smell now. My rice is toasted. I'm going to add in my stock. Add it in slowly. Mix it in. So, you want to let this come back up to a boil.

So, it has come back up to a boil. What you want to do is to cover it. Lower the heat down to low. Let it simmer for 20 minutes. 20 minutes later, here is your perfectly cooked white rice.
