Hi, I'm Don Schechter for About.com Computing. Today I'll show you how to put a password on your Microsoft Excel files.

Open an Excel File to Password Protect

  • Open Excel
  • CLICK 'File,' 'Open,' and open a file
  • CLICK 'File, 'Save As'
  • CLICK 'Tools' at the top right of the 'Save As' dialog box

Create a Password to Protect the File

  • CLICK 'General Options'
  • TYPE your password for opening the file and/or modifying it
  • CLICK 'OK'
  • RETYPE password at the prompt
