Transcript:What Is a National Party Convention?

Hi, I'm Kwanza Hall, Atlanta City Councilman for District 2 - District 2 is the heart of Atlanta, Georgia - and I'm here with About.com to tell you a little more about a national convention.

Definition of a Convention

National conventions are media events that bring together thousands of people - in some cases, tens of thousands of people - around the various and respective political parties here in the United States. There are two large parties here: the Republican party and the Democratic party.

What Happens at Conventions

National party conventions span over 3-4 days. They're not open to the public but they tend to bring together all the ideas and issues that the public is very concerned about.

You can expect to see all types of on camera negotiations, in some cases people in small groups or caucuses working around various issues and various candidates that they may be supporting from their respective cities and states, as well as the national agenda items that are currently in front of the candidates who are lobbying to be president or vice president, or to gain support in the national party organization, whether it be a president or some downline party official. So its really a grand set of conversations that are going on.
