Hey I'm Lauren for About.com and today we're profiling AMC's smash hit, "Mad Men".
Mad Men's Recipe for Success
AMC’s "Mad Men" has a recipe for success. Follow the three “s”s.
Sex. AMC Clip: “I’ve been thinking about this all day.”
Secrets. AMC Clip: “Why do you need to know that? Because it’s important. I can’t tell you.”
And style.
Mad Men Plot
The Emmy Award-winning drama is set to enter it’s sixth season, but before you tune in, here’s what you need to know. Mad Men is about an ad firm, it’s employees and 1960s America.
The focus is on Don Draper, the firm’s chain-smoking creative director. Played by Jon Hamm, Don has both a captivating charm and a dark side.
Then, there is Peggy Olson, the secretary-turned copywriter, played by Elisabeth Moss. She’s a woman fighting for a spot in a man’s business – in both the right and wrong ways.
Whereas Joan Harris, the office manager, works the system to get ahead. Played by Christina Hendricks, Joan is bold but she hides a lot behind that smirk.
Mad Men and Fashion
Probably "Mad Men’s" biggest influence though has been on the fashion industry. In 2011, Banana Republic even released a Mad Men collection full of skinny ties and debonair dresses. And, of course, the drinks. The characters are seen with a glass in hand maybe a bit too often. But it’s not all french cuffs and cocktails, Mad Men is also a critical hit.
Mad Men's Emmy Awards
For four straight seasons it has picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, which ties the record set earlier by Hill Street Blues. Last season it set a new record though, receiving 17 nominations without a win.
Will it reclaim it’s Emmy spotlight in 2012? We’re not sure. All we know is, we can’t wait to see what creator Matt Weiner has hidden in his suit pocket this season.
