Transcript:How to Set Up a Universal TV Remote

Hi, I'm Chris Iuliano with About.com and today I'll be showing you how to set up a universal TV remote.

Using a Universal Remote

The first thing that needs to be known is that not all Universal remotes are the same, however, this overview should give you a general idea of how to set up whichever universal remote control you purchase.

A universal remote control's purpose is to control multiple types of electronics, making things much more convenient for the owner, as it allows one controller to take the place of many. Most universal remote controls can be used on TVs, DVD players, Game consoles, CD players, and Cable boxes, along with a plethora of other products, even lamps.

To start the set up process have the buyers manual handy as it will give you step by step instructions, as well as the codes needed to set up your remote. If the manual is not available to you, you can usually go to the company's website to find all the information you need.

How to Set Up a Universal Remote

Step 1: Using your old remote, turn on the component that you want to program. In this case it will be the TV.

Step2: Point the universal remote toward the component and hold down the component button, in this case I will hold down the button labeled 'TV'. While holding down the button enter the code you found in the manual for your product. If done correctly the TV will turn off. Some products have multiple codes so keep trying them all until you find the correct one.

Step 3: When the product turns off, you can now let go of the component button on the remote which will save the code. The universal remote will give you a signal to let you know this has been done. For this remote control, the component button blinks 3 times.

Follow these same steps to sync your remote control to all of your products.
