Transcript:How to Connect the Computer to TV

Hi, I'm Andy Ramsey at About.com and, if you're like me, you've always wanted to hook up your computer to your TV so that you can watch all the media that's on your computer on your TV without having to transfer it in some way. Well, luckily, with newer computers and newer televisions, this is very easy to do.

What You Need to Get Started

In fact, all you need is an HDMI cable. You simply connect one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port of your computer and the other into a free HDMI port on your television. In this case, I'll be using number 3.

Older Machines Require a VGA Connection

We will see it pop up. This is my desktop. So, as you can see, this is a very simple process. Now, if you have an older computer or an older television, the connection you probably have is called a VGA connection. And those cables are very easy to come by and you simply hook up one end to your computer and one end to your television like I showed you there. But he benefit of HDMI, apart from having HD-quality video is that it also passes through the audio. So if you want to connect your television to your computer with an older cable, like a VGA cable, you'll also need to connect a different audio connection if you want the audio to come through as well.

HDMI Connections

Now, HDMI is a relatively new kind of connection. It's meant to go from digital to digital. Now, if you have an older computer or an older television that only has a VGA out/VGA in or RCA out/RCA in, you can get conversion cables. They're pretty easy to find in most big name retail electronics stores and also very easy to find online. And they'll convert that signal for you pretty easily. You may have to go into your display properties to adjust your colors and adjust the resolution as well.

Some Offer Direct Connections

As television and computer technology progresses, and televisions start to incorporate internet capabilities, we may find that this kind of connection isn't even necessary anymore. In fact, a lot of new TVs made my major manufacturers have direct connections to major content streams like YouTube and Netflix.
