Hi, I'm Laurel from About.com and today we are at one of my favorite places, Cedar Point Amusement Park in beautiful Sandusky, Ohio. Where we're going to take you for a ride on the Top Thrill Dragster. So, lets get started.
Specs of the Top Thrill Dragster
This ‘thrill Ride' roller-coaster debuted in 2003 and was one of the fastest and tallest roller coasters in the world.
This hydraulic launch rocket coaster takes 17 seconds, to shoot you 420 feet high, at 120 m.p.h.
The ride dominates the center of the park and can be seen from everywhere.
Bright Red flags above, signify there's some flying going on at the Drag-Strip design with all the ride operators dressed up in Pit-Crew uniforms. With a checkered flag theme, the loading station picks up passengers anticipating a need for speed and makes them wait.
What It's Like to Ride to Top Thrill Dragster
In front of the line, Dragstrip starting lights, flash from RED, to Yellow and then Green.
While waiting, the brakes release, leaving you floating on the tracks, in neutral.
In seconds, the train goes from ZERO to 120mph, peeling your eyelids wide open. Thrusting your body back into the seats for a thrill of your life!
It happens so fast that objects blur by as the train explodes, 90 degrees, straight up into the sky!
At the apex, you have a split second to catch your breath before you are thrown down a 270 degree twist, straight down facing earth.
Each Dragster rocket train weighs, 5.3 tons empty.
More Facts About the Top Thrill Dragster
This ride cost $25 million dollars to build and was manufactured by Intamin AG and designed by, Werner Stengel. It is 2,800 feet of steel track with a sit-down car style with a lap bar resistant.
There are a total of 6 trains with 5 cars per train and it rides 15 hundred people per hour, at capacity.
A Strata Coaster is a type of roller coaster with a height or drop that is 400 feet or more and completes a full circuit.
