Transcript:How to Use Star Fruit as a GarnishHi, my name is Stacey Pennington for About.com and today I'm going to show you how to use star fruit as a garnish.
Information About How to Use Star Fruit as a GarnishStar fruit is also known as Carambola. Because star fruit comes in different sizes, you'll need to choose the size that works best for your recipe. First, choose a nice ripe star fruit. A ripe star fruit is mostly yellow and the five ridges are slightly brown. Then, give the fruit a rinse with some warm water. Next, remove the two ends. Now, remove the brown from the five ridges, using a vegetable peeler or a sharp knife. Now you're ready to slice your fruit.
Tips for Using Star Fruit as a GarnishWhether you're cutting thin slices or thick, you will want to remove any seeds that you find. You can dress up drinks and deserts by adding a slice of star fruit. Using a ½ inch slice, cut from the centre out to one of the points. Then, simple slip the star fruit onto the rim of your glass.Try this for something different! By cutting a little bit more of the fruit off the five ridges your star fruit looks more like a flower.
Additional Tips for Using Star Fruit as a GarnishThis Thai curry soup looks more sensational with a slice of star fruit. Cut thin like this, the fruit is more translucent and will easily float on top of the soup. Star fruit, like other fruits, can be dried, and as a garnish they add beauty to this dried star fruit and nut cake. A thin slice of star fruit adds contrast and whimsy to this custard with raspberry coulis. And can also help define a dessert as in this Star Fruit with Orange Mango Sauce or a star fruit smoothie.
