Transcript:How to Use Dragon Fruit as a Garnish
Hi, I'm Scott for About.com. Today, I'm going to show you a couple ways to use dragon fruit as a garnish.
Ingredients and Supplies to Use Dragon Fruit as a Garnish
To get started you'll need:
- dragon fruit (washed)
- a sharp knife
- a large spoon
- a melon baller
Cut Cubes to Use Dragon Fruit as a Garnish
First, I'll show you how to cut the dragon fruit into small cubes. This technique is perfect for fruit salad. The cubes also make a great topping or garnish for desserts. Cut the dragon fruit in half with a large, sharp knife. Use a spoon to gently loosen the flesh from the skin. Lift the fruit out of the skin and place on a cutting board. Cut off any pink skin that is still attached to the fruit.
Slice the flesh into thin strips. If it sticks to your knife, just slide it back into place with your fingers. Now turn the cutting board and cut the fruit the other direction and you have cubed dragon fruit.
Use the Dragon Fruit Shell as a Garnish
You can use the left over shell as a garnish. Simply scrape out any remaining flesh. You can use it as a bowl for the cubed dragon fruit. You can also use it to serve fruit salad or even a beverage.
Make Balls to Use Dragon Fruit as a Garnish
Next, I'll show you how to make dragon fruit balls. Start by cutting the dragon fruit in half the long way. Use the melon baller to scoop small circles out of the fruit. Make sure you turn the melon baller completely around the fruit you are scooping to make a perfect ball shape. This technique makes a great topping or garnish for ice cream and fruit shakes.
Make Slices to Use Dragon Fruit as a Garnish
Finally, I'm going to show you how to make dragon fruit slices. Slices are perfect for a drink garnish. I'm going to leave the skin on for that extra pop of color. Start by cutting of the ends of the fruit. Now trim off the leaves so it is easier to cut. Slice the fruit as thinly as you like. Cut a small slit in the slice to garnish the side of a glass. This is a great option for dragon fruit lemonade or any citrus beverage.
Two Ways to Use Slices as a Dragon Fruit Garnish
There are two ways to use these slices as a garnish. You can place a slice inside a beverage, as an elegant garnish. This is perfect for punch or a fruity martini. You can also cut a small slit in the slice to garnish the side of a glass.
