Transcript:5 Birth Control Options for Your Teen

Hi, my name is Patricia O’Laughlin and I’m a marriage and family therapist with TherapyForParents.com. Today I’m speaking to you on behalf of About.com on 5 birth control options for your teen.

Condoms

The first option is condoms. There are condoms for males and there are condoms for females. Condoms not only prevent against pregnancy, but they can also prevent against STDs.

Birth Control Shot

The second option is the birth control shot. This is a shot that injects hormones into the body that stops ovulation. The shot is given every three months by a doctor.

Birth Control Pills

The third option is the birth control pill. You can get a prescription for the pill by taking your teen to the doctor. There are many different types of pills so ask questions to make sure you are getting the right one for your teen.

IUD

A fourth option is the Intrauterine Device or the IUD. This option includes a procedure from a doctor where they insert a device into the woman that prevents fertilization of the egg.

Abstinence

The fifth option is abstinence, or where your teen chooses not to engage in sex at all. This isn’t always the easiest option but it’s an important option. It’s an important one that you should talk to your teen about. Speaking to your teen about birth control is hard. It’s important for you to talk to them and to talk to a doctor about these options further. Thank you so much for watching. For more information, visit us on the web at About.com.
