The IRS has stated now that there are two different categories for dependency. One is a qualifying child and the other is a qualifying relative. This person, if you are going to take them as a dependent, cannot be claimed elsewhere on other tax returns.They are unmarried, are a U.S. citizen or resident alien, as how they are referred to. They also can be a resident of Canada or Mexico.
Where to Claim Dependents on Tax Forms
The exemptions are claimed, if you look at the long form form 1040, the United States Individual Income Tax Form itself, on line 6 A, B and C to claim exemptions for yourself, your spouse and other qualifying dependents.
