Hi, I'm Will Shortz with the Westchester Table Tennis Center. Today I'm here for About.com and I'm going to show you a quick tip. What is a sidespin in table tennis.
Hitting with Sidespin in Table Tennis
To put sidespin on a table tennis ball you move the arm laterally and you brush the ball against the paddle as the paddle swings to the side like this. By moving the paddle like this, the ball started going in this direction and then curved back in the opposite direction. And it's a tricky shot to return.
Returning Sidespin Hits in Table Tennis
If you're playing another player who uses sidespin, the rule of thumb is aim the ball in the other direction from where the player's paddle ended. So if I play like this with my paddle ending in this side, you would want to aim the ball on the other side of the table so that the ball will actually hit.
