Today we'll be learning about American swimmer and six-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte.
Ryan Lochte's Background
Ryan Lochte was born in Canandaigua, New York on August 3rd, 1984 and was taught to swim at the age of five partly by his father, a swim coach. In 2004, Lochte placed second in the 200 meter individual medley qualifying for the US Summer Olympics in Athens where he won a gold medal in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay and a silver in the 200 meter individual medley.
Ryan Lochte's Achievements
At the 2004 FINA Short Course World Championships he earned a silver medal in the 200 meter individual medley and the gold in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay. 2005 saw Lochte compete at the World Aquatics Championships where he won bronze medals in the 200 meter backstroke and 200 meter indivual medley as well as a gold in the 4x200 meter freestyle medley relay. in 2006, Lochte competed at the FINA Short Course World Championships where he won the 200 meter individual medley and the 200 meter backstroke, setting new world records in both as well as the 400 meter individual medley.

In 2007 at the World Aquatics Championships in Australia, Lochte won his first individual gold medal at a long course world championship in the 200-meter backstroke, breaking the world record. He also took home silver medals for his performance in the 100-meter backstroke, the 200-meter individual medley and the 400-meter individual medley.
Lochte's Olympic Appearances
2008 saw Lochte compete again in the Olympic games where he won bronze medals in the 200 and 400-meter individual medleys and gold medals in the 4x200 meter freestyle relay and the 200-meter backstroke, for which he set a new world and Olympic record with a time of 1 minute and 53.94 seconds. In 2009, Lochte competed in the World Aquatics Championships winning the gold in the 200 and 400-meter individual medleys and the 4x200 meter freestyle relay, breaking the world record with a time of 6 minutes and 58.55 seconds. In 2010, at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, Lochte won six gold medals for his performances in the 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter freestyle, the 200 and 400-meter individual medley, and the 4×100 and 4×200-meter freestyle relays.
That same year, Lochte became the first athlete in history to win seven medals at the FINA Short Course World Championships including gold medals in the 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter freestyle, 100, 200 and 400 meter individual medleys and the 4×100-meter medley relay, breaking two world records in the process. 2011 saw Lochte win 5 gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships in the 200 meter backstroke, 200 meter freestyle, 200 and 400 meter medleys and the 4x200 freestyle relay. that same year he was named American and World Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World magazine as well as best male swimmer for 2011 by FINA Aquatics world magazine.
