Hi I'm author, speaker and trainer JJ Flizanes of JJFlizanes.com. I'm speaking with you today on behalf of About.com about active stretching for your calves.
Use Plantarflexion as Active Stretching for Calves
So your calf muscles cause plantarflexion, which is basically a heel raise. The opposite action of plantarflexion, which contracts the calves, is called dorsiflexion. That's caused by your tibialis anterior. That gets contracted when you use it to pull up your toes, basically a toe raise.
Tips for Active Stretching for Calves
So put your attention on contracting your tibialis anterior, lifting up your toes, and holding that position. Contracting that tibialis anterior will allow your calves to relax and stretch.
