Hi. I’m Joann Ferrara, here today for About.com. I’m a physical therapist in Bayside, New York, and today I’m going to give you some activities to help your special needs child develop balance skills.

The Balance Beam

The balance beam exercise is fun because you can let the children be creative and move the wood. Or sticks. You can use yard sticks. You can use anything you have around the house; it doesn’t have to be a balance beam.

Practice Using Shapes and Letters

They can put them into various shapes, into, we have them do letters, you can du numbers, you can do – pretend that they’re walking the plank.

Focus on a Balanced Position

Anything you want to be creative and the idea is just to have the child stay on the balance beam so that their feet art coming close together. And they’re working on keeping their body in a balanced position.

Tape the Floor

The tape on the floor is so easy to do at home and it’s – the only thing stopping you there is your own creativity. Putting a piece of tape down and letting the children jump, hop, skip, balance, anything they can do on the tape – while staying on the tape is really going to help them develop balance.
