Transcript:Special Needs Coordination Games

Hi, I'm Joann Ferrara. Here today for About.com. I'm a physical therapist in Bayside, New York. Today I'm going to show you some activities that will help your special needs child to develop coordination.

Dance Coordination Games

So, for coordination you can use any children's song like the hokey pokey. Because in it they're having to move their body in space, move two body parts together. Move in a circle. Move up, move down, and all of it is good to help develop coordination. This can be done as often as your child wants to do it.

Obstacle Course Coordination Games

Obstacle courses are always great for coordination. You can use any objects you have at home. To make an obstacle course it doesn't have to be fancy. You can use pillows, you can use laundry baskets. You can use anything you have around the house to make an obstacle course.

But what you want to do is vary the positions. Children can go up down over on balancing. Moving their bodies. And all of that helps develop coordination.

The main ingredient for success with any exercise with children is that they should have fun and want to do it.
