Hi I'm Lynn Jaynes for About.com and I am going to show you how to make frosting.

Whether you're making a cake, cupcakes, or another dessert item, the success of your concoction begins with the frosting. There is nothing that quite compares to taste of homemade frosting and luckily, it's easy to make.

Tips for Making Frosting With Butter and Vanilla

Today, I am going to demonstrate a basic butter frosting made with vanilla, sifted confectioner's sugar, light cream, and of course butter.

Ingredients for a Basic Butter Frosting

Here are the ingredients you'll need:
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pound or 3 1/2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons milk or light cream

Instructions and Tips for Making Frosting

To prepare the frosting you'll need either a mixer or a hand mixer. In this case, I will use a hand mixer. Combine the butter, salt, and vanilla into a bowl. Mix until light and fluffy.Next, add the confectioner's sugar gradually. Dumping it in all at once would make the mixing process difficult. Once the sugar is added, the mixture will still resemble powdered sugar but don't worry the transformation to frosting will be quick. Add the 3 tablespoons of cream, and mix until smooth. At this point, if you'd like to adjust the consistency of your frosting, making it thinner and more spreadable, you can add more cream to suit your preference. When you're all finished, this recipe should make about 2 1/3 cups of frosting or enough for an 8-inch double layer cake or 1 dozen cupcakes. Thanks for watching.
