Hi, I am Gretchen Siegchrist for About.com Food, and I am going to show you how to make red velvet cake.Red Velvet Cake Ingredients
For this recipe, you will need:- 1 ounce red food coloring
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 eggs
- 2 1/4 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 1 cup buttermilk (if you do not have buttermilk, you can combine 1 cup regular milk with 1 teaspoon vinegar)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon vinegar
Combine the Ingredients
Begin by mixing together the butter, sugar, and eggs in a large bowl. Add the buttermilk, salt, cocoa powder, flour, and vanilla, and mix them in.In a small bowl, combine the vinegar and baking soda. Mix these together and let them fizz, then add them to the cake batter. Finally, add the food coloring and mix it in thoroughly.
Bake the Red Velvet Cake
Grease the cake pans and pour in the cake batter. Put the cake in the oven, and let it cook for 30 to 35 minutes until a fork comes out clean. Let the cake cool before removing it from the pan.Traditionally, red velvet cake is frosted with a white, vanilla, or cream cheese icing, but you can use whatever you would like.
