Hello, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, we are making homemade bread crumbs.

Instructions for Making Homemade Bread Crumbs

The only thing you need to make home made bread crumbs is a hunk of crusty, day-old or somewhat stale bread. I find that day-old French or Italian bread works really well for making homemade bread crumbs.

Additional Instructions for Making Homemade Bread Crumbs

Just cut the bread into pieces. You want them to be approximately 1/2-inch thick and maybe 2 inches wide, like this. Or you can even just tear the bread into pieces with your hands. Place the bread pieces in a food processor, and pulse until it forms coarse crumbs. The more stale the bread is, the drier the bread crumbs will be, and the faster they will process in the food processor. I generally stop when they look like Panko, like this. Use your homemade bread crumbs for meatloaf, breading chicken or anything you like.
