Transcript:Quick Tip: How to Brown Mushrooms

Hi, I'm Stephanie Gallagher for About.com, and today, I'll show you how to brown mushrooms properly.

Ingredients Needing for Browing Mushrooms

You will need:

  • 2-3 Tbsp. butter
  • 8 oz. sliced mushrooms

Instructions for Browing Mushrooms

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Now add the mushrooms. The most important thing is to only add enough mushrooms to make a single layer. If you overcrowd the pan, you will end up steaming the mushrooms, not browning them. I'm using about half of the 8 oz. container in this 12-inch skillet. Now spread the mushrooms out so there's a little space between them. This will help them brown.

Just let the mushrooms cook, without stirring, until they start to look golden brown, like this. Now turn them over, and let them brown on the other side. It won't take as long on the second side. And here are your browned mushrooms.
