Where to Find Green TomatoesGreen tomatoes are just regular red tomatoes that are picked before they're ripened. Most farmers markets offer green tomatoes, so be sure to check with your local market. Another option would be to contact your local grocery store. If you call ahead, most stores will special order them for you. Two other options are to shop online or grow them yourself.
If you have an abundance of good fresh tomatoes, freeze them whole. Just wash, dry, and put them in freezer bags.
Tips for Buying Green TomatoesWhen purchasing green tomatoes make sure to pick ones that are green and firm, but not as hard as rocks. Be sure not to pick solid green tomatoes, but ones that are starting to turn whitish in color. Soft and pink is not good, because they will fall apart when frying. There are several different types of green tomatoes.
Be sure to use common varieties like beefsteak or heirloom tomatoes. Heirloom green tomatoes ripen green, but remember, green tomatoes are just unripened red tomatoes. So you can really use any kind you want.
