Transcript:How to Make an Apple Pie Crust

Hi there, I'm Anne Marie Lusby for About.com. Today I am going to show you how to make a homemade apple pie crust, just the way grandma used to. The key to a wonderful home made apple pie is all in the crust.

Ingredients for the Apple Pie Crust

For this recipe you are going to need:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons shortening
  • 6-8 tablespoons ice water
If this is your first time making this pie crust, you may want to make a double batch to be sure you have enough crust. This recipe will fit a 9-inch pie pan, you can use a smaller one but no bigger than 9 inches.

Make the Dough for the Apple Pie Crust

First thing we need to do, in a large bowl mix in the 2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Put that aside for right now. Before we can use the butter it needs to be warm. You can warm it in the microwave until it is soft, but note it cannot be melted.

After your butter is soft we need to blend the 6 tablespoons of butter, 6 tablespoons shortening and ice water into the flour mixture. To blend the dough together, use a dough blender. I know it sounds electric but it is not.

Chill the Dough Before Baking an Apple Pie Crust

Once the mixture is well blended it is time to chill it. Place the pie crust in plastic wrap, then put in the refrigerator for 20-30 minutes. This is a good time to make your pie filling.

Once you have your pie filling ready you can remove the piecrust from the fridge and spread it in you pie tin. Well there you have it, the perfect pie crust for your homemade apple pie.
