When you're layering the ingredients, be sure to evenly spread the food within the bowl so that the layers are distinct and even. In a separate bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and sugar and then spread this over the top. It should extend to the edge of the bowl and cover the entire salad.

Tips for Seven-Layer Salad

Cover your bowl and let it chill overnight. When it's time to present your seven layer salad – garnish it with green onion and paprika. Right before serving, toss the ingredients together and enjoy! An alternative method - involving the use of small cans - allows you to present individual seven layer salads with all the layers intact.

First, remove the top and bottom lids of a small can. Set the can onto a salad plate. Layer individual portions of the ingredients into the can with a final top layer of shredded cheese. Cover and chill overnight. Then carefully lift away the can to serve!

Seven layer salads can be customized based on your tastes. Consider variants such as: red onion, green pepper, celery, mushrooms or water chestnuts.
