Transcript:How to Make Peanut Butter Eggs

Hi, I'm Gina Miller with About.com Food and today I'm making peanut butter eggs. This is a great recipe that the kids love. It's a family tradition to make these for Easter.

Ingredients for Peanut Butter Eggs

Here are the ingredients you'll need:

  • 1 package of cream cheese (about 8 ounces)
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1 jar of your choice of crunchy or creamy peanut butter
  • 8 semi-sweet chocolate squares (about 8 ounces each)
  • 2 pounds of confectioner's sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of shortening
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Create the Filling for Peanut Butter Eggs

Let's get started making peanut butter eggs! First, put the cream cheese, butter, peanut butter and vanilla in a large mixing bowl and beat until well blended. Here's a tip: Use an electric mixer to make sure all your ingredients are well blended. Begin to add the sugar 1 cup at a time while mixing the ingredients.

Form Egg Shapes for Peanut Butter Eggs

Using your hands or a spoon, form the mixture into egg shapes. Place the eggs on a tray and let them chill in the refrigerator for 45 minutes to an hour.

Create a Chocolate Coating for Peanut Butter Eggs

Next, melt the chocolate and shortening together. This can be done in the microwave or on the stovetop. After the chocolate is completely melted, slowly dip the eggs into the chocolate and coat them. You can also use a skewer to make sure you all your candies are completely covered.

Finish and Serve Your Peanut Butter Eggs

Finally, place the eggs on parchment paper lined trays and place them back in the refrigerator or freezer for another hour to allow them to harden. And now you have a great treat for your family.
