Transcript:How to Make No-Crust Apple PieHey all, I'm Anne Marie Lusby for About.com. Today we are going to show you how you can make Grandma's delicious apple pie but minus the crust.
No-crust pie is great for people looking to cut a few calories and put a new spin on an American classic. It is also a great way to add an extra burst of flavor to your already flavorful apple pie.
Ingredients for the No-Crust Apple PieFor this recipe you are going to need:
- 6 cups of peeled, cored and sliced apples
- 1-1/4 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/2 cup buttermilk baking mix
- 3/4 cup milk
- 2 eggs
- 2 tablespoons softened butter
- 1 cup buttermilk baking mix
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/3 cup dark brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons chilled margarine
Make the No-Crust Apple PieThe first thing we need to do is pre-heat our oven to 350 degrees. Next in a large bowl, we need to combine the apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, white sugar, and 1/2 cup baking mix. In another bowl, stir together the milk and eggs, then mix the milk and eggs into the apple mixture. This is our filling. Place the filling in a pie plate and dot with butter, put aside for right now.
To make our topping, combine 1 cup baking mix, walnuts, brown sugar, and margarine in a bowl. Mix this until it is crumbly -- this will serve as our pie topping. Sprinkle the topping over the apple filling.
Bake and Serve the No-Crust Apple PieThen place in pre-heated oven and let bake for 60 minutes, or until apples are cooked and the topping is golden brown. When finished, let cool, but be sure to serve it warm. Adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream is also a delicious touch.
