Transcript:How to Make Lemon Baked Tilapia

Hi, I’m Brent Rose for About.com and today I’m going to take you through how to make baked lemon and herb tilapia.

Ingredients Needed for Lemon Baked Tilapia:

1 small lemon
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 cup chopped green onions, with tops
1 tablespoon fresh chopped parsley
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
4 tilapia fillets, about 6-8 ounces each

Properly Prep Your Tilapia and Herbs

Fresh tilapia is usually better if it’s available, but you can use frozen tilapia filets, too, just make sure you let them thaw overnight in the fridge, or for a few hours, sealed in a bowl of cool water. First, preheat oven to 400° F. While it’s heating up, wash and chop the parsley, until you have one tablespoon. Then wash and chop a ¼ cup worth of green onions.

Season Tilapia with Lemon and Herb Butter

Place the four tablespoons of butter in a small bowl and let it soften (or soften in the microwave using a low power setting). Using a zester or a fine grater, zest the small lemon completely, and add the zest to the butter in the bowl. Then squeeze out one tablespoon of its juice and add that to the bowl as well (making sure you don’t get any seeds in).Now add the chopped onions, and the parsley. Then add 1/8th of a teaspoon of black better, followed by ¾ of a teaspoon of salt. Mix all of the ingredients thoroughly. It should look something like this.

Gently rinse the filets under slow-running, cold water, then place them on some paper towels and pat them dry with a few more.Now, butter a 12x8-inch or a 13x9-inch baking dish to create a non-stick surface. Place fillets in baking dish, carefully folding thinner edges underneath as necessary to promote even cooking. Top fillets with the butter mixture, spreading it evenly over them all, and they’re ready for the oven.Bake fillets for about 15 minutes, or until fish flakes easily with a fork. Then pull them out, let them cool for a couple minutes, and serve ‘em up! This delicious dish serves four people.
