Transcript:How to Make Homemade Pumpkin PureeHi, I'm Scott for About.com, today I'm going to show you how to make homemade pumpkin puree.
Supplies for Homemade Pumpkin PureeYou will need:
- A medium pie pumpkin
- a sharp knife
- a cutting board
- approximately 1 cup of water
- a large baking dish
- a fine mesh strainer
- and a food processor
Instructions for Making Homemade Pumpkin PureeYou will want to use a pie pumpkin for this recipe, they tender to be a little smaller, but are naturally sweeter than the pumpkins you buy for carving and decorating. Preheat your oven to 350. To get started, wash your pumpkin thoroughly to remove any dirt from the outer skin. Now, use a sharp knife to quarter the pumpkin. Cut it in half. Then cut each of those pieces in half. Scrape out the excess fibers. You can also separate out the seeds for baking. You can find a great pumpkin seed recipe on localfoods.about.com. Fill a large baking pan with 1/2-inch of water. Arrange the pumpkin quarters skin side down in the pan.
Bake at 350 degrees F. for 1 1/2 hours, or until tender.Once the pumpkin has had a chance to cool, remove peel. Puree the pumpkin in a food processor until it is the texture of baby food. Place puree in a fine mesh strainer set over a bowl, and allow to drain for several hours (or overnight in refrigerator), covered with plastic wrap.You can use this for pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, or any recipe that calls for pumpkin puree.
